Dora Kaprálová »Die Mariborhypnose«

Dora Kaprálová’s narrator travels to the small Slovenian town of Maribor to write a travel guide, but decides instead to explore the town from the perspective of a fly. Contemporary figures such as the guitarist Jim, the American court jester Timo and the 80-year-old hostess Daša, who sees Putin as a saviour, appear alongside historical figures from the 20th century, in particular Josip Broz Tito, the controversial ‘well-meaning dictator’, the writer Hašek and the playwright Wedekind. The kaleidoscopic perspective from an insect’s point of view enables an original narrative style in which fact and fiction intertwine to create a hypnotic effect.

With this novel, the author succeeds in offering an extraordinary perspective on the Balkans and Europe, as well as on a little-noticed town beneath which the Drava flows darkly. Dora Kaprálovás talks to literary scholar and journalist Katrin Schumacher about magic, power and the power of illusion. The actor Stephan Wolf-Schönburg will be reading from the book.
